What is the Democratic National Committee?

And why should you care?

At its simplest, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is the representative body of the Democratic Party. There are around 435 members of the DNC, most of whom are elected to represent their home states. The DNC holds quarterly meetings, has a number of standing committees (ex. Rules and Bylaws) and membership caucuses and councils (ex. Vets and Military Families). DNC members are also automatic delegates to the Democratic National Convention, though under a rules change in 2018 those delegates may not vote for the presidential nomination unless a second round of voting occurs. Virginia has 13 members, 5 of whom are elected to 4-year terms by the Virginia Democratic State Convention every presidential election year (and who are seated after that year’s Convention). I am running to be one of your 5 elected members!

The duties of DNC are definitely not glamorous. For the most part, they involve showing up at meetings, and representing the state’s interests on votes and discussions of importance. But like with any membership org, DNC is about active participation – it is what you make it. If elected as your representative, I intend to participate fully and take an active role in membership. If you want to know more about how I would represent you, I encourage you to check out “Why Dave?
